2025-08-26 We only had a one-night reservation, arriving late and wanting to make the most of it. We made a fire, used the hot tub, had some food, and finally headed to bed around midnight. When I moved a pillow to pull back the blanket, I saw a bug. Thinking we were just in the woods, I assumed it was a random outdoor bug. I snapped a picture to ID it online, and my boyfriend tossed it outside in a tissue. Search results: bedbug. I submitted another photo on a different site: confirmed bedbug. We had not gotten into bed yet, but our suitcases and clothes had been at the foot of the bed. Panic set in. We looked at line for what we were supposed to do- we double-bagged our belongings, cleaned surfaces, and inspected the bedding. Under the comforter, sheets, and two mattress covers, we found multiple bedbug casings along the mattress corners. Needless to say, we did not sleep. I messaged the front desk and waited until they opened at 8am. The manager was initially very kind and apologetic. He acknowledged the situation, offered to put us up in another hotel in town, and said he’d cover laundry service. He also arranged for an exterminator to come that morning. When the exterminator arrived, I showed him my photos. His words: “Yep, bedbug” and, pointing to the casings, “Definitely a bedbug infestation.” He used the word infestation. But once he and the manager inspected the cabin together, the tone shifted. Suddenly, the story became “We don’t know if YOU brought them.” That makes zero sense: we never got into bed, and the bugs’ casings were buried under layers of bedding and mattress protectors. There is no way we “introduced” that in a few hours. At that point, the generous offers disappeared. Instead of a different hotel and laundry reimbursement, we were offered another cabin on-site and on-site laundry only. We didn’t feel comfortable staying, so we left. With limited hotel options in town, we ended up in an overpriced, musty old hotel and had to buy new clothes at Walmart. The manager said they would refund our stay. Two weeks later, no refund. After I followed up, I got excuses about my booking being through a third party. Thankfully, I eventually got the money back from the booking site, not from the hotel. To be fair: at first, we liked the cabin. But bedbugs are a serious health and sanitation issue. Worse than finding them was how the situation was handled: kindness and accountability at first, then deflection, denial, and failure to follow through. Even the exterminator they hired didn’t seem very professional, so who knows how thoroughly the issue was treated.
