We had reserved a 2 bedroom suite for our family (2 parents and 4 college aged kids) for the night of August 12, 2021. We checked in around 11:30 p.m. At the time, the night clerk said “Oh you’ve got the 2 bedroom suite.” My wife thought he had an odd look when he said it and wondered if something was wrong with the room. However, when we first walked into the room it all looked very nice and clean. Within 5 minutes, while near the sofa, my son found a tiny black bug on his hand. None of us had ever seen a bed bug before so we weren’t sure what we were looking at. We were wondering what it was. Someone joked it might be a bed bug but we didn’t believe that could really be. Still, I looked at a picture on the internet, and it DID look like a bedbug. We weren’t sure what to do. We weren’t absolutely sure it was a bedbug. Even if it was, since we’d just walked in the room, we weren’t sure whether it had been in the room to start with or if it might have come in from the hall. We decided to see if there was another room where we could be moved. However, when I called the desk, the phone just rang, and rang, and rang. No one ever answered. I went downstairs to find someone but even though I waited a long time, no clerk or employee ever appeared. The desk was deserted. We were on our own with a room we’d already paid for. It was now after midnight. We were exhausted from a long drive. We weren’t sure it was a bedbug. We searched the room with a flashlight and saw no more. We decided to stay. Enormous, enormous mistake. The next morning, my wife awoke with blood on her sheet. My son also had some blood spots on his sheets and one on his face. It was clear we had bedbugs. Then, my daughter found another of the bugs- now unquestionably a bedbug. We were horrified when she then caught another bedbug. And another. And another. Still, we thought my wife had been bitten just once and my son a couple of times. We didn’t realize the bites often don’t show up for hours, or even days, depending on how your body reacts, so we weren’t too too upset at the time. We figured it could have been worse. We told the hotel what had happened so that it could have the room exterminated. They asked if we had seen any bugs in the master bedroom (odd question) I told them no, we’d seen everything in the smaller bedroom and sofa bed. They were very nice. They immediately comped our room without us even asking, and they gave us large garbage bags in which to put each of our suitcases to help prevent us from carrying any with us. We left, and continued our road trip. A few hours into our trip the bites started appearing — and itching. By the time we reached Florida, it was clear that my wife’s hands and arms were completely covered in bites. She had 20-25 on each hand. She had bites between each of her fingers, She had bites all the way up each arm. She had a couple of areas where there were so many bites, they all swelled together and they couldn’t even be accurately counted. Eventually, she counted 115 bites! That wasn’t the end, though, as several additional bites showed themselves over the next couple of days. She was so itchy, she could barely sleep for days on end. Our daughter also received dozens and dozens of bites on her hands and arms. I had several bites on shoulders and other areas. One son had bites all over his elbows and hands- probably at least 20-30 bites, if not more. Our other sons ended up with anywhere from 2-4 bites a piece. Between the 6 of us we were probably bitten more than 200 times in what was clearly a major infestation. We slept in 3 different rooms of the 2 bedroom suite and were bitten in each room- though my wife and daughter, who slept in the smaller bedroom received the worst of it and were totally miserable for our vacation. The itching was unbearable and they were embarrassed to appear in bathing suits during our beach vacation since they had ugly bites all over their arms. I now find it hard to believe that the hotel didn’t know they had a problem with such a major infestation. They HAD to have had problems before. Absolutely no amount of money was worth what we went through. The comped room was the correct thing to do, but didn’t begin to make up for what we experienced. I honestly had no idea things could be so bad.
