A bed bug was seen as we unfolded the rollout bed in living room after we had lived in the room for five days. We also received bites and saw evidence of bites (blood and fecal) and bug activity in our king sized bed. We took the bed bug we found to the front desk where it was confirmed to be a bed bug. The hotel management were very professional in addressing the issue. They took all of our clothing to be dried at high heat before moving us to another room which was in fact an upgrade and there we had no experience of bed bugs. They were very intentional about treating our clothing so as not to move the infestation to another room. A Pest Control Company was called in to inspect and treat our room and we were given a copy of their report which confirmed the room had bed bugs and assessed the bed bug activity to be "light", The report stated that 7 bed bugs were found in the plastic corners of the bed. The room was immediately treated. In spite of this experience we have no hesitation recommending this hotel. We found the staff to be professional, friendly, supportive and helpful and thoroughly responsive to the bed bug issue. I am filing the report only to advise anyone using this hotel - or any other in the Vancouver area as well - to be vigilant in checking your room before moving in. This meant we lost a day of sight seeing as we dealt with the problem, moved to another room, and washed down all of our personal items. Upon returning home we have spent two days carefully laundering and moving our clothing with the utmost of care to prevent bringing eggs or bed bugs to our home. We had to throw out some clothing and suitcases to be absolutely certain we did not transfer bugs to our home. The cost of this experience is over $300 to us personally. However, we cannot blame the hotel. Bed bugs are a huge and growing problem everywhere. We have learned it is a very serious problem in the west-end of Vancouver where this hotel is located. We did check our room when we moved in as best we knew how but we still got caught. Before you travel to this area, read up on bed bugs and understand how to examine your room and follow all the recommended protocol to prevent carrying bed bugs home.
