Incident: 12/13/16 - Visited King Spa with a Groupon from 12:30-5 PM. Enjoyed my visit. Came home itchy. I assumed it was from the showering. Saw red bites on my left, upper arm that I dismissed as mosquito bites as I was away from the city. 12/14/16 - Next morning while showering and dressing saw the bites that were more than I originally saw and still did not make the connection. While at work, I was very itchy and visited the Wellness Center. The nurse confirmed that they are bed-bug bites. 12/14/16 – When I returned home, 9:30 PM, I pulled back bed linen and examined my linen and mattress for about 15 minutes with a flashlight looking for what I was instructed to look for from numerous websites such as Terminix. I took all this linen, clothes and towels I carried to King Spa and washed them all in detergent and disinfectant and hot water. 12/15/16 8:30 - Called King Spa at 8:30 AM and left a message about the bug bites and that it was urgent that I speak with a manager. Super King Sauna 201-947-9955. 8:45 AM - Called NJ Dept. of Heath, Palisades Park office and left a message. 11:00 – received a message from King Spa, Kevin (manager). 12:25 – calling them back, the number he left “is not in service”. I attempted to send an email but it did not go through. 12:30 - Got through to the spa and spoke with a staff person who said the manager is not available and he will have to call me back. I mentioned to her that it is very urgent and told her of the bed-bug bites. She was not very responsive and just replied, “That has never happened before.” 1:35 PM – Kevin from King Spa called me and I told him my concern. His response: “That has never happened before. Thank you for calling.” I pleaded with him to take some precautions because so many people pass through the facility. 1:50 PM – Christine King from NJ Health Dept. (201-585-4105), Palisades Park called me. I told her of the incident and she does believe it is likely especially after describing the environment I was lying in. I told her of my concern for others and that so many people pass through the place. She agreed that it is a very busy place. She said she can go and investigate “next week”. I told her, sooner is better. I was not given a complaint reference number, just her word. 12/15/16 – 10 PM, I noticed one of the bites looked like it may be developing an infection. I visited the ER. The doctor confirmed this and prescribed and antibiotic. 12/17/16 - My building manager arranged for an exterminator to examine my apartment for bed bugs. My apartment was cleared as no evidence was found.
