We booked a room at the Travelers Inn in New Lisbon, WI to stay one night from 8/6/2016 to 8/7/2016. When I say we, I am referring to my 2yr. old daughter, 1yr. old son, and Joann (their mother). We were going to visit her family that was in town staying in that area. Check in was @ 3pm. I called earlier to let the front desk know that we were going to be checking in after 3pm, but that we were indeed going to be there, & were depending on the room. I was assured that it was not a problem. The Hotel was booked for a wedding and baseball tournaments. We arrived around 5pm to drop our belongings off as we were going back to the family members house to visit until about 9pm. We did a quick check of the mattresses on both beds and did not see any noticeable signs of bed bugs. We left the hotel before 6pm. We arrived back at the hotel around 920pm. I drove over to the McDonalds to get a snack for the two of us. We went to bed shortly after eating. Around 1130pm I was awoken by Joann who was very upset. She was yelling that something had crawled across her face. We immediately turned on the lights and saw a bed bug. Joann smashed it on the pillow case, killing it. It did leave a blood stain. We were grossed out. We checked all the pillow cases and mattresses and found another adult sized bed bug in the same pillow and killed it. Both of our children were still asleep at this point. Joann went to speak with the staff and report the bed bugs. I did a google search and confirmed that these definitely were bed bugs. Joann returned about 10mins later with a woman that was working the night shift. She examined the carcasses on the pillow, inches from our sons head, and told us that they were not bed bugs but pine beetles. The woman left the room with the two dead bed bugs in her hand. A few minutes had passed and Joann went to speak with her again. They both returned a short time later with fresh pillows and cases. I assured her that these were indeed bed bugs and that I had looked up pine beetles on the internet, and there is no possible way they could be that. She denied it again and said that they were wood ticks. We told her they were definitely bed bugs. Her response was to offer us another room. She said we could just leave our belongings in the room we were in and sleep in a room down the hall. We told her at this point there was no way we would be staying at the hotel and she left the room. We checked behind the bed and found lots of bed bugs, some alive, but most dead lining the wall. We immediately packed our belongings, woke our children, checked them both thoroughly, and loaded up the car. We pulled the car around front and I went inside to return the key cards to the front desk. The same woman came to greet me. I told her that this incident completely ruined our trip. We now had to leave a day early, cancelling our plans, and had to drive two and a half hours in the middle of the night with our 2 young children. I made it clear that I did not expect to be charged for this room. She assured me that I would not be charged and said that she would be informing the owner the next day. There was no formal check out in regards to a receipt or paper work of any kind. Only to find out today 8/9/16 they did in fact decide to charge me, but gave us the bed bug discount, which knocked about $40.00 off the original price of the room. I am currently disputing the charge with my credit card company. We drove the two hours plus back home, dodging deer and trying to stay awake. At around 3am we had to quarantine everything that had been in that room, take hot showers, and start washing all of our clothing. In hind sight, we really should have informed the wedding party and soft ball guests, sorry. Honestly, we were embarrassed of the situation and could not get out of there fast enough. I feel this establishment also handled the situation poorly. This is probably part of the hotel/motel business and the problem should be properly taken care of instead of putting future patrons health at risk.
