The most horrific experience ever faced when staying at a hotel! We needed a hotel to get sleep at in between traveling from Florida to New York, so stopped in Santee, South Carolina. My boyfriend and I Checked in at the Howard Johnson Hotel at 11:50pm on Sunday 4/12/2015/ We were checked in by the front desk lady who was extremely unprofessional, as she had her phone on and was having a full conversation with her girlfriend on SPEAKERPHONE. As I handed her my payment she was busy having a conversation. After receiving our room key cards we went upstairs to our room. The sheets were extremely wrinkled and there was sticky coffee cups stains on the night stands. It was truly disgusting and I regret not leaving the hotel at that moment. Because it was a late hour, we decided to stay and just get some sleep. We turned off the lights and went to sleep at 1:30am. At around 3:00am my boyfriend started moving around in bed and scratching his back saying he has a rash. After a few minutes he felt something crawling so he took his phone and shined the light onto the bed sheets. On the pillow was a bed bug crawling towards my side. We pulled the pillow away and there were numerous bed bugs that started to spread. We jumped out of bed and turned the lights on. We have captured his bites and video of the bed bug. I broke down into emotional distress and threw up in the bathroom from this horrific experience. We packed our clothing into a plastic garbage bag and disposed our clothing. We immediately went downstairs to the front desk to resolve this matter and the receptionist, who checked us in told us she can not issue a refund and only offered us to switch to a different room. Terrified that the other rooms had the same infestation, we asked for the manager’s contact information. She gave us a number and we left to our car. We immediately called the number provided and it was the number to the hotel so the receptionist picked up, which was no help. We left to the nearest hospital because the bite mark was swelling. In the hospital I had an emotional break down from stress. Driving back we were itching everywhere and extremely anxious and stressed. I am scared to close my eyes and go to sleep and am still in emotional distress. The following night I could not sleep. I am having trouble going to bed and keep checking around me because I am suffering from the trauma. This violation of health and safety codes and extreme negligence from the hotel is unacceptable.
