Stayed one night: September 14, 2022, in Room 25. Was awoken around 3:15 AM to something crawling across my back. Thought it was a spider and brushed it off in the dark. Decided I couldn't fall back asleep and eventually flipped the lights on. Saw a stream of what I thought were spiders crawling out from between the mattress and box spring. Spiders I wish they'd been. I identified them with my phone: bedbugs. I had no idea they could be so large, some were a quarter inch, some smaller, and some smaller still. Many different sizes of bedbug indicates many generations, which indicates a major infestation in Room 25. They were crawling across the bed, on the headboard, across the floor, and on my backpack. I called the front desk and within minutes, Kiran, the manager, arrived with a spray bottle of insecticide (in a way that to me made the occurrence of bedbugs seem routine to him, though I have no direct proof of that). He moved me to the room next door (Room 26), and I stayed up the rest of the night scanning my belongings and killing two bedbugs I found on my backpack. I left at dawn, quarantining my belongings in the bed of my truck. After arriving to my next destination, I stripped down in the garage and walked directly into the shower, at the time showing no signs of any bites. I'd come to find out through research that bedbug bites can take several days to show themselves. Sure enough, over the next 48 hours, I realized just how many times I'd been bitten. I was devoured by bedbugs at this motel. 79 bites... on my left hand alone. Well over 500 bedbug bites over my body, some in huge clusters that make my skin look warty with red blisters. I look like I've been shot several times with a shotgun, at all different ranges, all across my body. The itching has been maddening and sleep depriving. Three nights after the incidence, I finally had to go to Urgent Care for some relief. They prescribed me Prednisone and Hydroxyzine, a steroid and antihistamine, respectively. These helped a bit, but today is the fifth day and I'm still in a great deal of discomfort. Not to mention the hours of time I've spent cleaning, trying to make sure I don't pass the Sunset's bedbugs to anywhere else, along with not doing the things I enjoy because I'm covered in itchy red welts. The Sunset is a family run motel. Kiran and his parents live there and are very nice. I actually had stayed there quite a few times this past summer, with no issues related to bedbugs (although my wife developed a half-dozen blisters on her hand a day or two after sleeping there about a month ago, and knowing what we now know, they may well have been bedbug bites - I would bet, but can't say for sure). I feel for Kiran and his family in these tough economic times. But I also feel I've been done a great disservice because of how the motel's bedbug problem was dealt with, which is to say it was dealt with inappropriately. To have such a large infestation speaks to negligence, and because of this negligence, my life has been flipped upside down.
