Bedbug Report: 14 May 2026 The Best Western Plus Carriage Inn 5525 Sepulveda Blvd. Sherman Oaks, California 91411 I have been staying at the Best Western Plus Carriage Inn, located at 5525 Sepulveda Blvd., Sherman Oaks, CA 91411, since 26 April and have already prepaid through Saturday, 16 May 2026.  The issue(s) with the hotel began with a water leak in the ceiling (and hazardous mold on the walls near the bed), which resulted in a severe allergic reaction— I was really sick as a result. I requested a room change and was eventually moved to Room 221, which is where I encountered numerous bedbug bites. Additional Report Information: I booked the stay at the Carriage Inn because I'm having renovations at my home.  I live and work locally. I became very unwell during my stay in room #202 (persistent cough, runny eyes, extreme sore throat, nasal congestion, and lost my voice entirely after the first three days).  I thought I had the flu, but I smelled mold and realized it wasn't the flu at all; I was having a severe allergic reaction to the mold in my hotel room.  The wall adjacent to the bed had thick, gooey, orange/brown mold starting at the crown molding and oozing down the wall to the baseboards and carpeting.  There was also a bubbling, dripping leak (water splashing onto the bedside table and creating a large pool) coming from the ceiling.  The mold smell was overpowering the closer I got.  I recorded the mold and leak(s) on my phone.  I asked the front desk to relocate me, and this turned into quite a production.  The first alternate room (Room #114) looked like a cave and smelled badly (I took a pass).  When the hotel staff opened the door to the second alternative room (Room #121), it reeked of mold, so she quickly shut it.  The 3rd and 4th alternatives (Rooms #220 and #221) would have been acceptable to me, except the AC units didn't work.  Over the next few days, I was relocated to another room (#209) until they could install a working AC unit in Room #221. I was finally moved into Room #221 and slept there one night. In the morning, I discovered several bedbug bites on my legs. wrist, and hand (extremely itchy and painful, consistent with all bedbug reports and images online). Although the Carriage Inn allows pets, the bites were not fleas or even ticks. Bedbug bites are quite different (and an obvious health hazard). I am worried about my belongings and the steps I need to take, per the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to avoid bringing bedbugs home. This includes not bringing suitcases inside, treating my luggage and clothing with insecticides, vacuuming everything, heating items to very high temperatures, keeping everything separate from my bedroom and closet, and possibly discarding anything that may have been contaminated during my stay at the Best Western Carriage Inn. All of the above recommended actions (per EPA) are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the steps travelers must take when bedbugs have been discovered in a hotel, hostel, Airbnb, etc. Plus, I have to worry about treating the bedbug bites. I have opened an official complaint with the LA County Department of Public Health (Environmental Health Division/Lodging & Institutions). Inspector ____ told me they will investigate the entire hotel property, not just the specific individual hotel rooms I reported for bedbugs and hazardous mold (and waterpipe ceiling leaks).  I hope the inspection is thorough and that the hotel management will be forced to address the bedbugs and other health hazards at the Best Western Plus Carriage Inn. I believe it is vital that the general public be made aware of serious health risks when traveling (including hazardous mold and bed bug infestations). * I have removed the Inspector's name, and I ask that you remove the Complaint ID number I provided in my report prior to posting. * Images and video are available
