Checked in the evening of January 21, 2024. Put my luggage and purse on the countertop as there was no luggage rack in the room. Took a shower and sat on the bed. All of a sudden there were bedbugs all over the bed. I checked my luggage and purse on the counter and it was covered with tiny bedbugs. Called front desk and the clerk was very helpful. She gathered up my belongings and put them in the dryer for 30 minutes and moved me to a new room. She sprayed my suitcase and crochet purse, but I'm not convinced that would kill all the bedbugs in the crevices. Later I asked the night clerk for some trash bags to put my belongings in so that I could further sanitize them. He gave me one trash bag. In morning I asked head desk clerk if they had a protocol or advice to keep me from taking the bed bugs home. Was told no. I asked for another trash bag and was told they did not have any. I pointed out to her where the other clerk had gotten one and she reluctantly gave me one. Night clerk was still there and made the disgusting comment that I probably brought the bedbugs with me!!! As an immuno-compromised patient going to the Mayo Clinic this whole situation was traumatizing anyway and to be treated like that was inexcusable.

I am allergic to bedbugs. I discovered this allergy when I was in college (I am now in my 40s) and slept at an apartment with bedbugs. When I am bit, I wake up with distinctive welts that eventually develop pink dots in the center that open up and seep. It took a while to realize this, but I finally did when I woke up in the middle of the night and caught them crawling on me. I put them in a jar, and had them identified as bedbugs. They were multiple sizes. I helped my friend find hundreds of other bedbugs in her apartment after that and her apartment had to be treated. Because of this, I know what bedbugs look like. I stayed at the Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham Rochester North Mayo Clinic from February 9-10, 2026. When I woke up in the morning, I had overslept and had to rush to get to my appointment at the Mayo Clinic. I had showered the night before and wore the yoga pants I was planning on wearing for my heart appointment to bed. * This is important later. I glanced at my face while I was brushing my teeth and noticed welts on my face and was worried I had an allergic reaction to something. We checked out quickly, simply setting the keys on the counter on our way out the door. When we got in the car, my sister was driving and I had a chance to look closer at my face. I immediately recognized the breakfast, lunch, dinner marks on both cheeks. My left wrist and neck also had bites. I knew it was bedbugs. My sister and I put our things in the back of my vehicle as soon as we got to the Mayo. During my procedure, I was having a heart monitor placed when I felt something crawling at my waistband—I slapped my hip and pinched a bedbug between my fingers. I did not have my phone with me to take a picture, but made sure to tell the technician working with me to warn everyone not to stay at the Microtel! She said she didn’t realize there was a bedbug issue in Rochester. I’ve stayed in four different hotels in Rochester, and this is the first time I’ve had issues. I will say that the room looked clean when we checked in, so I didn’t even think to look for bedbugs, and I have checked plenty in the past that look less clean. I called the hotel right after my appointment, and when I told the person that I had stayed in Room 205, had found a bedbug crawling on the clothes I had worn to bed and had bites, she said, “Thanks for letting us know. I’ll send people up to take care of it.” And hung up immediately. No apology or anything. My sister and I went to get lunch and I decided to call back and ask to speak to a manager and request my money back. We hadn’t paid much for the room, but I didn’t think it was right to make us pay for it when I was going to have to deal with swollen bites and itching. I called and that person DID apologize but said the manager wouldn’t be in until the following day. She said that she would leave a message with my name and number and that I would receive a call back from the manager. On February 11th, I waited until 3:00 and then I called Microtel again and asked for the manager. The person on the phone said that the manager, Amanda, just got there and she would see if she could talk to me. I could hear them whispering and then Amanda got on the phone. She was defensive and rude right away. She said that they were “experts” at checking for bedbugs since they are in the hotel industry and that they went up there and there was nothing in that room. I offered to send pictures of my bites and told her that I had seen the bug. She didn’t care. She said she wouldn’t refund me and never apologized. DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL!
