Bedbug Reviews

Typically, we wouldn't have stayed in a hotel, but decided to stay the Friday night (01/09/26) before my daughter's cheer competition (01/10/26) due to predicted icy weather in the early morning hours that would potentially impact our already 2+ hour drive. Rooms in the area were very limited, and this seemed like the best option within our budget. We checked in around 7 pm, and the lobby looked like it had been upgraded. For the most part, (besides being tiny), our room aesthetic was okay, but it wasn't very clean and had a musty/animal smell. We hung out in the room as we had a quick snack, and got ready to head down and use the pool & hot tub. The hot tub was out of order, and the pool was small and not very clean or well-maintained, but my daughter had fun regardless. After an hour of swimming, we went back up to the room. While we were gettting ready for bed we noticed the mold issues in the bathroom and that both the shower faucet and sink faucet had the hot & cold water reversed from what was labeled on the fixture, the tv didn't have any service, and the fridge (in the middle of the room under the tv) was connected to an outlet that was controlled by a light switch at the door --- I was glad we discovered this before we headed to bed or the food we brought along would have been spoiled by morning. Fortunately, we had brought a laptop along, and the wifi worked well, so we snuggled up in bed and watched some Netflix until nearly 10 pm, when we knew we needed to get to bed due to an early morning and a long day ahead of us. When my daughter went over to the other bed and peeled back those covers, she started freaking out because a bug scurried a bit deeper into the bed. I hopped out of my bed and peeled back the covers of hers further in search, and quickly discovered a bed bug, then another, and more as I peeled back the layers of that bed and then the one we had both been in for the last hour or so. I caught/pinched a few of the bed bugs with tissues and briefly inspected them while I wrapped my head around what to do regarding this so late at night. I had never seen them in person, but a few months ago, we happened to watch an episode on bed bugs created by one of the YouTubers my daughter likes, so I knew with certainty that's what it was. I quickly started gathering our things and called the front desk. No answer, but they called back in a minute or so. I informed her that we had found bed bugs in our room and wouldn't be paying for or staying in the room. She asked me to come down to the desk and said she'd reach out to the manager. When we got down to the desk a couple of minutes later, the woman we spoke with and a man were there talking amongst each other. Besides her acknowledging that we were the ones who called and then handing me a printed paper showing that my card would be refunded (and saying as much), there was absolutely no apology or expressed empathy about the situation. No denial of or acknowledgment that they have awareness of the problem. --- We ended up getting out of there, heading to the only "store" open (Kwik Trip) to buy a pack of big garbage bags and ziplock bags, and getting checked in to another hotel that had an opening when we called. Unfortunately, our night away ended up with very little sleep, a hotel room (albeit tremendously nicer) that was 3x what we had expected to pay, and the rest of the weekend dedicated to hot laundering, extensively inspecting our belongings and bodies, and trying to deep-clean the car. I have no clue yet if we brought any bedbugs home with us, but we definitely brought home some paranoia that will likely last a while and impact our comfort with future hotel visits anywhere else.
