Sunday, 8/5/2017 arrived to Casa Marquita Hotel in Avalon, for my birthday. We were given room 317, a single king bed, very dated with a small refrigerator with rusting hinges located on a make shift shelf on the right hand side of the closet space—the room appeared clean, however, very stuffy upon entering with a musty smell. We immediately turned on the hotel air-conditioning unit. There was a notice asking to reuse our towels and refrain from having housekeeping change the sheets as Catalina Island was having a bad drought. Since we were only going to be staying 2 nights, we were ok with that request. My husband and I then left to go get a bite to eat, then returned, watched TV then went to sleep. The next morning, I awakened with itchy hive like welts on my right and left forearm and the area where my neck meets my shoulder on the left. Also a burning, stinging itchy and swollen welt on my right baby toe. I am a Registed Nurse and work in a large hospital in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit and had never experienced anything like this. My husband and I walked to a nearby drug store and picked up 1% hydrocortisone cream hoping to take care of some of the itchiness, swelling, stinging and burning sensation. We had a couples massage and my massage therapist made mention of the redddned welts on my arms and neck. After our massages we went to play miniature golf, then we went back to our room, got cleaned up and went to dinner at the Avalon Grille, came back to our room and went to sleep. August 7, 2018–our departure date. Still itching, burning and stinging, I applied more hydrocortisone cream. My husband pulled back the sheets and found a bed bug on my side of the bed. I have photos of my arms, neck, baby toe and the bed bug. We went down to the hotel reception office and told the most senior office staff and she said she’d get a hold of the hotel manager, Abel Xo. Upon getting ahold of the hotel manager, she claimed he’d be at the hotel at 11am, but we couldn’t wait as we would have missed the ferry back to Dana Point. I emailed both the hotel manager, Mr. Xo and the hotel owner, Mr. Lee and yet to receive a reply. This whole event has made me anxious, disgusted, unsanitary and embarrassed. I have never had to deal with such a horrible situation. Please advise.
