March 21, 2015, Room 260 Prepaid $125 for what is normally an $80 room using Hotwire, so it was nonrefundable - combination of spring break with local events made rooms in area scarce and unusually expensive. I've never had problems with Hotwire rooms before, and I do not take this as typical, but I needed to find a vacant room within 30mi of my destination for an event at 5:30am on 3/22/15. Checked in at ~11pm, and was immediately told I'd have to pay a $50 upgrade fee to get a non-smoking room (I don't smoke, but I'm not fussy about sleep) or a room with a microwave/fridge (I had no food). Owner/attendant was reluctant to honor my reservation as booked, which was suspicious, but I really just wanted my room so I could catch at least a few hours sleep. The room was clearly stained from smokers abuse, but I don't judge the cleanliness of a room just by that. I checked the beds immediately for bedbugs, as I ALWAYS do when traveling. Immediately I smashed two blood-filled crawlers on the first corner of the mattress I checked. They were located on the bed farther from the door, on the side next to the nightstand. I checked the other bed for good measure, and there were active crawlers there too (I didn't smash them). I reported the bedbugs to the front desk and was told to come down to get a different room. For the record, the alternate room was only a couple units away (room 266). (It had a microwave/fridge, so I'll be checking my credit card to see if an upgrade fee was charged.) The room was visibly dirtier (if that's possible to imagine), but my thorough checks of both beds (mattresses and box springs), headboards, lampshades, dressers, nightstands, and hanging artwork yielded no active bedbugs (although I did stir up a lot of dust and debris in the process). I also found several other insects and arachnids that had been smashed by prior guests in that room. I did find debris in the bed creases but no signs of active bedbugs (although I did treat my stay as if I would be bitten that night and would likely have hitchhikers afterward).
