Incident occurred on 1/8/18 at around midnight. I was sitting in bed about to turn the lights off and go to sleep when I noticed a red bug about the size of a tick crawling in the sheets. I pulled the sheets all the way down and there were at least 5 more where my feet would have been while sleeping. I inspected the sides of the bed and there were some there as well. They varied in size with a few being very large (the size of a deer tick) while others were smaller (slightly larger than a flea). I notified management immediately and they sent a newer front desk staff member to my room to handle the situation. He took pictures on his phone and observed all of the crawling bugs. He didn't have any sense of protocol to handle the situation. In fact, as we were about to change rooms, I stopped him and suggested I inspect my suitcase to make sure it's not contaminated with bed bugs so that we don't spread them to the next room. I pulled out the folded shirt that I had been wearing earlier that was now in my suitcase and sure enough, it had a large bedbug crawling on it. I inspected all of the other clothes and my suitcase and didn't see any others. We then changed rooms. He didn't quarantine any of my clothes or my suitcase. The next day, I spoke to the manager to get an update. She told me that in the 15 years that she had worked there, they had never had an issue with bedbugs. I complained to her about how there was a lack of protocol and process on how to handle the bedbugs and that without it, they will quickly be overrun with them in all rooms. She said the cleaning staff are trained to spot them. I also told her that none of my belongings or suitcase had been quarantined or laundered and she looked surprised. She then immediately sent one of her maintenance staff up to my room to inspect my bag. He used rubbing alcohol and sprayed my suitcase all over with it I guess to flush out any other bugs. None appeared, thankfully. When I asked him if they have had any issues with bedbugs before, he told me that they did all of the time before the recent renovation that occurred mid-2017. He said that since the renovation, "not very much" which tells me that I wasn't the first to report it. They refunded me 1 of the 2 nights that I stayed there. The manager told me she was going to refund the 2nd night, but that hasn't happened yet and it's been a week since I stayed there. She also said that Ecolab would be coming in to inspect the room with the bedbugs and that she'd provide me with the report. I haven't received that yet either.
