After a 14-hour travel day from our home, my wife and I checked into the motel around 8:30 PM on Saturday, 8/19/17. At home, I forgot my high illuminous flash light that I normally use to inspect our motel beds. Notwithstanding, I did not observe any problem with the bed using the motel room light that was available for the inspection. I should have anticipated problems when I could not find a remote control for the Phillips TV in the room. The front desk gave me a GE remote that would not operate the Phillips TV. Later, the front desk offered me a $20 discount on my room because the Phillips TV could not be operated. We went to sleep around 10 PM. However, about 2:00 AM my wife woke me and turned ON the night light because she felt something crawling on her body. We investigated the bed and its sheets. We saw a small reddish color bug slowly crawling near her pillow. She was very upset about the very small bug that I could barely see in the poorly illuminated night light. Upon further investigation, we observed a much larger brownish bug that was crawling at a fast speed thru the sheets on my wife’s side of the bed. Please see the attached video file for images of the bed bug. I called the front desk to report the bed bug problem and the night manager came to inspect the situation. In the interim, the bed bug was trying to escape by its fast crawl across the sheets so I crushed the bed bug to preserve its existence. A reddish liquid was pressed out of the bed bug onto the bed sheet. We shared the cell phone video of the bed bug with the night manager. We requested relocation to another room. However, the night manager reported that all of his rooms were occupied. Furthermore, no rooms were available in nearby motels due to visitors attending the solar eclipse. Consequently, we had no safe place to spend the night. We decided to stay awake in the bed bug room until about 6:00 AM. At that time, we checked OUT of the motel to continue our trip to Chattanooga, TN. Notwithstanding better conditions at other motels, my wife & I continue to be traumatized by the tragedy at the Comfort Suites East in Knoxville, TN. The mental stresses have created poor sleep patterns and serious concerns that our luggage, car, personal bodies, etc. have been infested by bed bug products. We trust that we did not pickup bed bugs or their eggs for transport back to our home.
